Product Description The rhetorical styles of Presidents Clinton and Obama, when communicating across the interface of race, are analyzed using rhetorical theory. Clinton¿s eight presidential addresses to the Congressional Black Caucus¿ (CBC) Annual Dinner are studied using the ¿rhetoric of inclusion¿ which embodies the concepts of identification and authority. His rhetorical style is shown to ensure the loyalty of the CBC. Obama¿s use of the ¿rhetoric of hope¿ reaches out to all of America and successfully circumvents the consideration of his race. The rhetoric of hope embraces the appeals of ethos, logos and pathos, and rhetorical devices that rely on repetition. Six of Obama¿s speeches – keynote address at the 2004 DNC,… More >>

Barack Obama is a Leo, which is not surprising as it is often the sign of a famous man – and especially a famous politician. He is the Junior United States Senator and the only African American serving in the U.S. Senate. He is, of course, also running for President of the United States. His birthday is August 4, 1961.
Like many famous people, Barack Obama has a stellium in his chart, which means three or more planets in his house or sign. Not only does Obama have the Sun in Leo but also the Lillith, Mars, Uranus and his North Node. This is in the seventh house of social activity so it is not surprising that Barack is such a popular candidate. His ability to swing people over to his way of thinking is completely made apparent by the bulk of these planets in his chart.
Barack Obama is a good public speaker with a natural popularity with others. Having his moon in Gemini indicates this. This man is probably also a great writer. Obama’s ascendant is in Aquarius, which bodes very well for a successful career as president. It defines his role as a great visionary.
The planets in his charts are mostly in fire signs, which would endow him with courage, nobility, and also a great deal of energy. He would be an energetic, flexible and likeable President.
The weakest part of his chart is the Venus in Cancer. This can mean addiction, jealousy, and oversensitivity to the opposite sex. However, it can also mean a real ability to empathize with others. Barack Obama is already well known for his addiction to cigarettes.
One of the oddest things in his chart is that he has both Saturn and Jupiter in the twelfth house. This indicates an individual that is destined to be a heavy individual of some sort. Jupiter is in Aquarius, which can mean certain instability emotionally or mentally, or issues to do with the past. Saturn is retrograde in Capricorn, which is not a good omen for anybody. For a Presidential leader, it can mean an assassination or corruption. In the twelfth house, it can mean a slide down the mountain of achieve due to a big humiliation of some kind.
Weirdly, Barack Obama may have a bit of psychic ability. He has Neptune in the ninth house, where it is exalted. This means spiritual abilities. However, it can also mean addiction, codependency and a tendency to be overwhelmed by his feelings every now and then. Venus in Cancer doubles the impact of this. This is a very sensitive individual who, despite Obama’s calm outward demeanor, probably inwardly rages. That said, he is a bit of an iceberg. Barack has sensitivities and intuitive beliefs that the general public will never ever see. What we see instead is a well spoken, charming and very organized man.
Obama The ongoing mortgage crisis is a problem that is affecting more and more American families every day. To help protect home ownership and fight mortgage fraud, Obama has presented a multi-tiered plan designed to help families facing foreclosure and also monitor the mortgage industry better to avoid future problems.
Obama supports the Stop Fraud Act that provides a definition of mortgage fraud and rules and regulations to help stop the problem. The act also requires the Government Accountability Office to evaluate lending practices and report their findings to congress.
The final component of Obama’s mortgage relief plan is to create a universal mortgage credit. Currently, the United States tax code only encourages families to purchase a home with a tax deduction. However, it is currently only available to taxpayers that itemize their returns. This leaves out about 2/3 of Americans who elect to take the standard deduction. Obama would like to create a universal mortgage credit that he claims will benefit an additional 10 million homeowners.
McCain Senator McCain also has is own take on the mortgage crisis. His plan is called the new “Home Plan,” which aims to provide help to those hurt by the housing crisis. McCain claims that his plan will allow every deserving homeowner the opportunity to trade in a burdensome mortgage for a more manageable one that will reflect his or her home’s current value.
However, exactly “who” is deserving? According to McCain’s website, eligible individuals include those Americans that hold a non-conventional mortgage taken after 2005. The house will need to serve as the home owner’s primary place of residence and he or she will need to be able prove they cannot meet current payments, but would be able to comply with a new 30 year fixed rate mortgage.
The Difference Although Obama’s plan seems more substantive than McCain’s, they both attempt to help solve the countries mortgage problem. However, as with many other issues Obama’s seems to target lower income families namely those that do not itemize which typically correlates to families that make under $50,000. I think it is also interesting to note that they both propose the creation of a government agency to monitor the mortgage industry, but they propose them for different branches of the government.
2. Lower Income Americans
Obama Sen. Obama’s tax plan seems in line with his redistribution of wealth ideals. His economic plans surround the idea of giving every lower-income American an opportunity to better themselves. The centerpiece is his “Make Work Pay” tax credit that would encourage Americans to take control of their lives, while providing tax relief to both low and middle income taxes. The credit would offset federal taxes on the first $8,100 of a taxpayers earnings and would essentially generate a credit of up to $500 for single persons or $1,000 per family. According to Obama, this credit would eliminate income taxes for at least 10 million low-income Americans.
Another of Obama’s more popular tax views is to help make higher education more affordable. He would do this through creating a credit to reimburse taxpayers for the costs of obtaining a college education. According to his plan, the credit would reimburse taxpayers on the first $4,000 they spend on a college education. Obama’s campaign claims that it will cover two-thirds of the cost of attending a public college or university.
McCain As with most Republicans, McCain’s tax plan is more geared to middle and upper income Americans. However, one major component of his campaign has been “Immediate Help for American Families.” In this plan, he claims to target policies that will provide relief to American taxpayers facing rising gas and food prices and record foreclosures. However, it is unclear how McCain’s actual proposals will do that. Specifically, McCain target opaque issues like corn and sugar subsidies, trade barriers, and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). While we all know that nothing happens over night, it is even more unclear how these changes in these policies will immediately help the American taxpayer as McCain claims.
One of the tax cuts McCain supports is raising the personal exemption for dependents from $3,500 to $7,000. This would help any working taxpayer with dependents they have to provide for, regardless of income level.
The Difference Obama’s tax plan is much more favorable to lower income Americans than McCain’s. He supports programs like the “Make Work Pay” credit that will not only help lower income Americans, but also encourage them to work. It is also interesting to note that both candidates support tax credits designed to help families or anyone taking care of dependents.
3. Higher Income Americans
Obama Senator Obama is a big believer in our progressive tax system – and he is not afraid to hide that. So one of the first things Obama is set to do is letting President Bush’s 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to selectively expire. By “selectively expire”, Obama endorses extending those tax cuts on the rates for all but the top two income tax brackets. In addition, Obama also advocates increasing the income cap on payroll taxes. This would essentially be a huge tax increase for taxpayers earning between $97,000 and $250,000, which goes against Obama’s prior commitment to not raise taxes on individuals making less than $250,000.
Although Obama voted “nay” on repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), he does support a revamp of the tax. The specific details of his plan are a bit hazy, but Obama has claimed he would like to index the tax according to inflation so that it does not affect middle-income Americans.
McCain McCain is a strong supporter of lowering taxes to encourage economic growth, which is the dominant economic stance of the Republican Party. Not only does he support renewing the Bush tax cuts, but he also favors numerous tax cuts. McCain hopes to reduce taxes on Capital Gains, Interest, Dividend, Investment income, and even corporate tax rates.
McCain is a strong supporter of repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), which would be a tax cut for the upper middle income taxpayers. However, if McCain wants this tax fully repealed, then he is going to have to strike a deal with Congress, and it seems highly unlikely that he would get enough support to make this drastic and costly change.
Although McCain had originally voted against the Bush tax cuts, he now claims to support an extension of the plan. “I voted to extend them because it would have the effect of having a tax increase,” claimed McCain when asked about his flip-flop. “The tax cuts have increased revenues enormously. They’ve been very beneficial. The problem is that spending has lurched completely out of control. My proposal was to restrain spending. I do not support tax increases. And the effect of not making them permanent would have the effect of a tax increase.”
The Difference It is no surprise that McCain’s tax views favor the upper income Americans, as he supports the full extension of President Bush’s tax cut. On the other hand, he does support the repeal of the AMT, which is being levied on more of middle income Americans each year. Although Obama does support other tax breaks for the middle class, he does not want to repeal the AMT.
4. Capital Gains
Obama One of the more controversial aspects of Obama’s tax proposal is his hope to nearly double the taxes levied on Capital Gains. The current tax rate on Capital Gains is 15%, and Obama hopes to raise it to 28%. “At a time when Americans are working harder than ever, we are taxing income from work at nearly twice the level that we’re taxing gains for investors,” Obama claims. “We’ve lost the balance between work and wealth.”
When questioned about his plan’s to nearly double the rate, Obama claims that he wants to raise the tax for fairness, not for revenue. One of his arguments is that the top 50 hedge fund managers made $29 billion last year, but paid lower tax rates then their secretaries did. Obama wants to restore the rate back to what it was in the Clinton era. Although the rate is much lower today than it was a decade ago, it is being levied on a lot more people. Investing is not only for the rich any more – millions of middle income America invests in stocks, retirement accounts, and mutual funds.
Additionally, Obama also fails to mention that the 28% Capital Gains rate was dropped to 20% during President Clinton’s time in office and studies show that the federal government’s revenue from Capital Gains actually increased. Then, when President Bush dropped the rate down to 15% the revenue increased yet again.
McCain McCain plans to keep the current Capital Gains tax rates. He claims that since these taxes are voluntary, they should not be taxes as ordinary income. In order to make a profit, someone must sell a stock. Further taxes could distort decision-making, increase the use of tax shelters, and even lower the federal government’s revenue. Additionally, McCain claims that this tax policy actually helps lower income Americans, as half of all capital gains end up benefiting persons earning less than $50,000 a year.
The Difference The differences between McCain’s and Obama’s views on Capital Gains are quite simple. Obama favors doubling the tax rate and McCain wants to keep it at current levels. Although it may seem unfair for Capital Gains to be taxed at lower rates than income, there is some evidence that supports the belief that it encourages economic growth. The federal government’s revenue from Capital Gains has increased since the rate was lowered. You cannot argue against facts. Finally, raising a tax for fairness and not for revenue is not a sound economic policy.
By allowing the seething minority of hate-filled sociopaths to vent their anti-Obama fury via constantly televised exposure, the media itself is poised for a plummet not unlike the tumbling economy…
Many Wiccans and Pagans use spell work and magick for personal issues without ever applying them to larger, global problems. Those that do, though, tend to cast overly broad spells. They work magick to heal the environment, or bring about world peace. Those are ambitious goals, but spell casting works better with a more narrow focus. Large effects are more easily achieved by taking several small steps — like eating an elephant one bite at a time. If we are to be truly responsible for creating the world as we want it to be, then we need to prioritize magickal work on government and current events, choosing very specific political goals.
The main political problem on everyoneâs mind right now is the Presidential election, particularly the heavily contested democratic primary. However, the suggestions I make here will work equally well for the general election, once the democratic nominee has been selected. These spells are not meant to take the place of active participation in the mundane political process. Rather, they act as a spiritual supplement that boosts the effectiveness of those efforts, and provide a psychological boost to help keep you fighting for what you believe.
Iâm going to assume most of you reading this have already made up your minds whom to support in the democratic primary. I also assume you are strongly in favor of one candidate, or strongly opposed to the other. If you plan on voting for John McCain in the general election, Iâm betting on the latter. However, though I recognize not all Pagans follow the particularly Wiccan ethic of âan it harm none, do what ye will,â I am going to stick to spells here that focus on positive results for the candidate you favor, rather than negative results for the candidate you want to lose. I also want to stress that any magick you do should, first and foremost, have the good of the country and its citizens as its primary goal, not promoting any one candidate to the position of President at any cost.
The first and most important step of any spell work is planning its purpose. On one side of a piece of paper, brainstorm a list of all the good things that have been happening that favor your candidate. On the other side, list all the negative things that have been tarnishing the candidateâs image or losing him or her support. Then decide whether you want to do one very specific spell to deal with one particular positive or negative, or one larger ritual designed to boost all the positives, generally, or neutralize all the negatives. Give this a lot of thought; your decision dictates the intent with which you charge the spell, and your ability to focus on a very specific intent is the essential ingredient to the success of your magick.
Second, decide on the kind of magick that will work best for your intent and your inclination. If you are ambitious and want to do a full-scale ritual to cover many positives or negatives, make sure you have the time to devote to planning and execution; the ability to acquire all the magickal tools that you will want to use; and a location that will give you the room and privacy you need to work, for the length of time you will need. If you donât have that kind of attention span, and prefer to do something fast and simple, then a quick spell involving candle magick or some form of elemental work might be better for you. Just make sure itâs a method you have affinity for. If you are a water baby and hate working with fire, then stay away from candle magick. For ideas, try looking through Raymond Bucklandâs Practical Candleburning Rituals or Scott Cunninghamâs Earth Magick .
Third, work out all the details of symbolism for your spell to make it most effective for your purpose and your psyche. For example, if you are using candle magick, you want to choose a color of candle that symbolizes your purpose, based on your own personal symbol set. Many Americans associate the color green with money, for instance, so if you want to boost fundraising, that might be a good color to use. Some people prefer gold for that purpose. Make sure you choose a color that has the strongest emotional association for you, personally. Use the same internal logic to decide on which scented oil, if any, to dress the candle with; which herbs or powders to rub over the dressed candle or sprinkle around the base; what symbols to carve onto the candle; whether to put a prayer, affirmation, or other statement of your spell focus on a piece of parchment to be placed under the candle as it burns; etc. I would like to stress that all these symbols are merely tools to help you focus your intent. Not a one of them is necessary to spell work. You can do the entire thing in your imagination, if your concentration and visualization skills are well-developed. If you donât feel quite that confident, but donât have the money or the time to go shopping, then a simple white candle decorated with symbols drawn in the appropriately colored marker will work perfectly fine.
Fourth, using the decisions you made in step three to make a shopping list, go buy or otherwise acquire and assemble in one place all the items you will need for the spell. You can do the spell immediately, as soon as youâve gotten everything together. Or you can set a date and time for the spell based on time of day, astrological sign, planetary alignment, significance of the day of the week, phase of the moon, etc. Donât worry about doing this unless you feel it will boost your belief in the efficacy of the spell. The last thing you want to do is get into the mind set that you have to do all of it, and have everything ârightâ or âperfect,â for your spell to work. That only handicaps your spell and your own power. All power from magick comes from you and your focus of will. Donât let anyone take your power away from you by telling you different.
Fifth, if you have a particular deity, angel, or guardian entity whose energy you would like to draw upon, ask for their guidance and help. If there is an entity that seems particularly appropriate for the kind of spell work you are doing or its purpose, ask them for help, too.
Sixth, if you want to chant, pray, sing or drum while working your spell, either decide in advance what youâre going to say or do and script it, or improvise in the moment, letting the words come to you spontaneously; both are powerful methods. You can do any of that out loud or silently, in your own head. You may have gathered from all this preparation that your magick has already started, and is going strong, long before you actually start the spell proper. Thatâs the point â magick is about focusing your energy and intention on your purpose, and everything that you think and do to manifest that purpose is part of that magick.
Finally, work your spell from start to finish. Hold your candidate in your mind, and see him or her surrounded in the positive energy of your spell work. Imagine the outcome that you want the spell to accomplish, and send all the good and hopeful emotional energy that youâve been accumulating into that mental image and the components of the spell in front of you. When you feel the intensity of that energy tapping out, give it one more intense emotional burst, and release it to the Universe. Wiccans would typically close with a proviso along the lines of âfor the good of all, harming none, so mote it be.â That is simply to account for the possibility that we are all human, and can never know everything there is to know about a situation, so we ask the Universe to ensure that no harm comes to anyone from our spell because of our ignorance of circumstance.
Once you have finished your spell, the most important thing you can do to ensure its success is let it go. Donât worry about whether it worked, because doubts running through your mind are the opposite energy to that which you used in preparing the spell, and thus detract from its effectiveness. The more invested we are emotionally in having a spell work, the more likely we are to worry about whether it did, so itâs usually best to just put it out of your mind and forget about it. If you think about it at all, do it by noticing positive stories in the news that you can attribute to your spell. You donât have to claim that those things happened solely because of your magick, but by drawing a correlation in your own mind between your spell and subsequent positive events, you are both boosting your belief in your own power, and adding the energy of that positive attention to your magick.
Donât make the mistake, however, of simply doing a spell and then forgetting about the election entirely, thinking that youâve done your bit. Magick is most effective when it is used in conjunction with physical, real world action. Doing a spell to find a new job, for example, wonât generally work unless you are also actively searching through want ads and going on interviews. Doing a spell in conjunction with those activities, however, dramatically increases your likelihood of finding a more appropriate job, a better job, a higher paying job, or finding one faster. The psychological effect alone does wonders for your attitude.
So get out there, and canvass for your candidate. Man a phone bank. Send in a donation. Post a comment at a blog listing his or her positive traits and qualifications. Take substantive action to make your desired outcome a reality. Take responsibility for creating the world as you want it to be. That is the only true purpose of magick, and everything we do in alignment with that goal, from voting, to marching, to writing a letter to the editor, is a magickal act.
Will the Goldendoodle be the choice pick for the Obama family, who’ll soon be residing in the White House? Well, its quite possible. Featured on Entertainment Tomight as being “hypo-allergenic”……….if the Obama’s fall for THAT gimic, the Golden Retriever club will be seething in glistening red when they see the beautiful Goldendoodle dog become a First Family pet!
Since 1999, the Goldendoodle dog has been blasted by dog fanciers, purebred fanatics and others as being nothing more than a high priced, designer mutt. As a Goldendoodle breeder since 1999, I’ve always known them to be entirely more than what many fanatics considered them to be. I always said that those who made hateful comments about the Goldendoodle dog, never met one nor have they ever owned one.
I can’t tell you how many people we’ve converted to become Goldendoodle fanatics! Once someone owns a Goldendoodle, many could never consider anything else. The Goldendoodle dog is a celebrity in its own right….and rightly so!
While yes, the Goldendoodle dog is a low shedding, low allergenic dog…..they definitely are NOT hypo-allergenic and I could not believe my ears that a representative for the American Kennel Club named off several purebred dog breeds as being so! Take the Wheaten Terrier for instance. Yes, its appearance does resemble the Goldendoodle dog quite a bit, but hypo-allergenic they are not and they don’t always make a great pet for kids. Wheaten Terriers can be stubborn and fiercely independent and may need someone who is experienced with the breed.
The Goldendoodle dog, when bred correctly…..not coming from multi generations and NOT coming from inbred parents or inbreeding period, can be extremely loving pets for kids of all ages. Goldendoodles who are six months or older have gone through most of their “shedding phases” but by no means they are hypo-allergenic. Dogs in general will track in pollen on their feet and on their coat after going outside. On a heavy pollen day, it will be quite normal for them to track the pollen inside. Reports say that the Obamas’ daughter has allergies. Well, I certainly hope if they select a Goldendoodle as their first family dog, that they will NOT get it based on a breeder telling them the dog is “hypo-allergenic”. I certainly also recommend that they have their daughter tested first to see what her allergy “triggers” are.
If the Obamas do select a Goldendoodle as their first family pet, the dog will make tons of friends and the White House staff will enjoy the loving nature of the Goldendoodle dog! They are playful, generous in giving affection, very loving dogs. Whether they select a Goldendoodle; a Wheaten Terrier; Miniature Schnauzer; LhasaPoo; Schnoodle or purebred Poodle, I hope they do not base their decision on breeders’ claim of the dog being “non shedding” or “hypoallergenic”. I was just astonished to hear the reporter on ET report that the Goldendoodle was a hypo-allergenic dog! It is of no wonder that when some people get the Goldendoodle dog, they find themselves having issues with shedding or allergies. It is because of erroneous reports and claims made on television and the internet. Whatever dog they get, I hope they get the dog because it is a low shedding dog……not because a breeder or reporter made the claim it was “hypoallergenic” and don’t think for one minute that they have NOT already been flooded with thousands of requests by breeders of all breeds, to gladly give the Obamas’ their first Presidental dog!

I am deeply concerned, not just as a Civil Rights advocate, and not just as as a constitutional and first amendment lawyer and as an election attorney in California, but simply as an American at the election campaign tactics I am seeing in this 2008 Presidential election by the Republican party. Even as criticism mounts from both Democrats and Republicans, the tactics being employed by the Republican Presidential candidates are destroying any semblance of truth and fairness in the election process and using discrimination to try to gain votes.
Now we are hearing of the latest tactic by John McCain, the very candidate who previously criticized this tactic in a previous election – robo calls. Robo calls are automated telephone calls that are negative attacks on the other candidate, only instead of airing these ads on television, they come by way of the telephone, usually when you are having dinner.
John McCain only days before he began using these robo calls, criticized the Democratic candidate for allegedly spending more money than any campaign in history on negative ads. Whether this claim is true or not in terms of money, it does not appear to be true in its inference that Obama is using a greater percentage of his ads on negative ads. That would be John McCain’s campaign.
In his latest tactic, John McCain has clearly crossed the line once again by using these automated calls to tell voters that Barack Obama allegedly voted against a bill that would give care to babies born alive after abortions, that Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington, that Obama places Hollywood above America, that he has worked closely with a terrorist, and that Obama lacks the judgment to lead the country.
Now add the inferences by the Republican party and/or their candidates, surrogates and the people introducing the candidates at rallies that the Democratic candidate is unpatriotic, has an arab sounding middle name, is a person to be scared of, or is a person who can’t be trusted, who has a hidden agenda, or who by virtue of an association with someone who did something when the candidate was eight years old, is a terrorist. Is it any wonder that a woman, at a rally like so many others for the Republicans where hate-filled shouts have been made in recent days, told John McCain she had read that Barack Obama was an Arab?
How, after all these years of improving race relations in this country, are these tactics and election advertisements being allowed to cause civil rights leaders and members of the public fear they are taking us back to times in this country that we thought were behind us? How can a candidate who claims he puts his country first make every attempt to divide this country? We all know that John McCain, who has a long and honorable past, is a better man than what we are seeing at his rallies or on one particular news station. Yet, we continue to see actions and comments at Republican rallies and now these robo calls that have now drawn the ire not just of civil rights activists but even the concern of other Republican Congressmen and Senators. Is it any wonder that Colin Powell, a Republican who served as Secretary of State, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Security Adviser under Republican Administrations has come out in support of Barack Obama and criticized the campaign tactics of John McCain, the latest of which is to infer that Obama’s policies are socialist.
In the last several elections, the focus of many of the most objectionable tactics were to pit religious voters against voters for whom religion was not an issue, based on perceived stances by one or the other candidate on religious issues. This type of insinuation has also been used this year against the democratic candidate, on the basis of an incorrect assumption by some and an intentional mischaracterization by others that since Obama was born in Kenya, he must be a Muslim.
More anger and consternation was brought to the surface this year with the strong showing by Hillary Clinton in the primaries and the selection of Sarah Palin as the vice presidential running mate of John McCain. With questions raised in particular toward Sarah Palin of whether she could be vice president and still be a good mother, women cried gender discrimination foul at the media.
Is it naive to ask why a candidate’s religion ever enter into the debate? If the candidate says he won’t let it interfere with his being fair and evenhanded, shouldn’t that be the end of it? Why should a candidate’s age be a problem if they are knowledgeable and not in bad health, if the Vice Presidential candidate is qualified as well? Why should a person’s gender ever be a problem? But to many voters, these aspects of a candidate are the most if not the only reason for how they will vote.
Perhaps we, as a nation, are forced to accept that at election time, some of people’s worst sides rise to the forefront in our election process, but shouldn’t we be better than that, and shouldn’t the persons we are asked to elect be better than that?
If the polls are any indication, this year we may just see a backlash against those who would make discriminatory inferences, and whose party would use false allegations as the basis for part of their campaigns. It may be naive, but it is hoped that based on a few comments made in the last few days by John McCain, before the election is over and with signs he is behind in the polls, John McCain will repudiate the statements made out of anger and fear by supporters at his rallies even more forcefully than in some earlier statements and again repeat that his supporters should be respectful of Barack Obama and his accomplishments. For at this time in our country’s history, our country can least afford to be torn apart by campaign strategies that have little to do with solving our country’s economic crisis.
