it’s not what i wanted to see and it needs work but at least once it’s law then it’s easier to amend and you know how much congress enjoys making laws and changing them.

It will probably take 15-20 years before the full impact of this bill takes affect. But history & common sense tells you that it result in huge increases in taxes and fees to pay for it. Since rarely does the government do a better job than the private sector, the quality of health care will get far worse. Limiting what medical personnel & medical type companies can charge for the services will result in shortages which will mean long waits for medical treatment. The government will have no choice but to implement major rationing in order to have some kind of control over costs.

Finally adding a huge entitlement program to the system which cannot afford the entitlement programs we already have ensures the financial collapse of this country.

In my opinion, the biggest advantage to the average American is the knowledge that you will be able to get health insurance at a fairly reasonable cost if you should loose your job. This is especially important to people that lose their job in their 50s since that is when many people start to experience health problems and insurance companies will not insure, insure only with extremely high deductibles, and/or raise the cost of insurance beyond the ability to pay for those people,

In either the senate or house bill, insurance companies will no longer be able to cancel policies, deny coverage due to preexisting conditions, or raise the premium beyond the rate charged for the average person of that age.

In my case, I quit my job about 10 years ago at age 55 due to chronic fatigue. I had saved up enough money to survive so it wasn’t a big deal. I carried my Cobra insurance for the next 18 months and when I applied for Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance I was denied but said I qualified on their risk plan. They said I was a risk because of my records indicating chronic fatigue even though my medical expenses never exceeded $2,000 in any year and usually never exceeded $200. They offered me a plan that cost $600 per month (reasonable but expected to rise to at least $1200 per month by age 65) but the plan had a $10,000 deductible and a 30% co-pay. Therefore I would need to have medical costs of about $40,000 per year to break even ($10,000 deductible + $7,200 in premiums + $24,000 paid at 70%). Fortunately I was lucky since I was eligible for VA insurance (no longer available to new participants without military related injuries since 2003).

In another case, my brother had a stroke last year at age 55. He had been trying to get back to work but the doctors will not release him back to work since they believe he cannot perform his job any longer. Currently he is on Cobra but that will run out in another year. Because the doctors will not release him back to work, he was recently forced to apply for social security disability but he will not be eligible for medicare for about 1 1/2 years after Cobra expires. He will then have to apply on the open market for insurance and will likely be turned down or the cost and deductible will be so great, bankruptcy would be likely under the current regulations due to the cost or inability to get insurance and has medical problems again. With the new bill, he will likely be able to survive without declaring bankruptcy.

You may think that will not happen to you but it is likely that either you, your wife, yours or your wife’s parents, yours or your wife’s siblings, your children, or your grandchildren will have such an experience in their lives.

You may think that if you are frugal and save your money, you will be ok. However, under the current regulations, you could have savings of over a $1 million but one hospital say could wipe that out completely if you can’t get insurance.
