One person cannot do the job of an entire nation’s police force. The reason he gave his friend, and the arresting officer, a beer was because it was already a high profile case. Then he made a comment which inflamed the issue, since he was now involved he did what any mature adult would do and tried to resolve the problem.
EDIT: If we are assuming that he should care about all alleged hate crimes and that he is biased toward only liberal issues then why did he not comment about the beating of a gay man caught on camera?

Your logic implies that Obama has to address every hate crime regardless of race because excluding one racial group implies racism against the unaddressed racial group.
